Kunming Bboys 2003

I traveled to Southwest China in 2003 and saw a bboy show at Speak Easy Bar in Kunming, Yunnan Province. They were good. Had a lot of power moves down and a kinda pop routine going on. The event was put on by an American visitor who was teaching English at a university. He was a bboy, but I forget his name.

There's got to be history further back than that. Hope this thread picks up.

Peace.

bboy history in kunming is pretty confusing. i cant post much right now but im hoping to get back to this thread. right now the crew holding it down from kunming is K.G.S. (kings of ghost street) and they started dancing in 2003/2004. recently they made top 4 in boty china 2009. i livedin kunming 2002-2006 and went back there this summer for three months to stay with my parents. talking to the contemporary ppl in the scene in kunming from what i understand the "dance" of "hiphop" didnt get there until 2001. and even when it did, people did not know what it was called or anything. some choreographer just spread it.

to be continued...

p.s. here r some helpful links:

if anything watch the 2nd video. both klt n kgs r my homeboys/girls so if u wanna get in touch w/ them hit me up

This is mad " Kunming " history , ha ha i live in Kunming and never met any of you guys . I started parties at Speak Easy in 2003 when i first arrived here and did a B-boy hour ever week for the guys to come and practice. Speakeasy had no customers and was about to go bust and i started a night there called "Funk O Puss"

KGS have a dance studio now , i gave up putting on nights in Kunming as never really got any support from anyone . China has a much bigger Boy scene in Guangdong and Beijing.

If you interested in China , heres a mix form my crew Lost Soul Crew , its a B-Boy mix with funk , latin and classic rap .

yo whats up dsk. i met you when you were throwing the boty 2009 soundtrack release party during the summer. i remember that one dude at speakeasy dissing you and i had to step inbetween you and him to stop a confrontation.

over this summer i mainly trained with klt in their studio (my parents live up in beichen) and then came down to yunda to train with kgs when i had the time.

i didnt know you had b-boy hour every week at speak easy. i remember jus battling at speakeasy around 2004-2006 with different dancers - not necessarily bboys. i went when they were spinning hiphop - if i knew you were spinning i would have gone there a bit more.

yeah the KM scene is void of support. kgs is very good for being from a small city in china. however what i never understood is that if bboys r supposed to have a very close relationship with music i would have thought that kunming bboys would be the best in china since they have the you living in their city. didnt make any sense to me why that wasnt the case. you can argue for non-government support and a small, less competitive scene but that only goes so far. ive asked this question to the different dancers out there n none of them gave me a satisfactory answer - maybe you can fill me in?

i was thinking of hitting you up over the summer but heard you were out of town alot. hopefully next summer (summer of 2010) when i go back to kunming ill definitely hit you up. you really brought the heat that night you spun at speakeasy, and i can really say you are one of my fav djs. good shit. peace

Thanks man , yeah sorry about that shit with that guy usually i can control myself but WTF coming to our hiphop / funk night and then shouting i want ROCK !!! Thats Kunming :

Im really good friends with KGS but im always busy out of town with shows and stuff , just give me a message if you know when your gonna be back . Theres a lot of battles happening now in China and level getting real good , so if you can travel come out and meet some of the crews at one of the bigger battles.

BTW whats your name?

Im uploading some vids form Beijing's Dragon Style ill post links when done,

peace
