Bboy Physicx
Rivers Crew - Korea
Floor Gangz - Worldwide
Rivers started a bboying school. Why did you start one? Not a lot of crews are doing so.
In the beginning, I was really sad there weren’t a lot of people who knew the joy of dancing. So, if I could make a school, and teach the people how to dance, and to enjoy dance, perhaps I can change the bboying field in Korea.
You said that you wanted to teach people the joy of dancing. Do you feel that the bboy scene in Korea is reaching its potential? How do you view the bboying field in Korea?
As far as bboys go, it is nice to know that the people do it here because they love to dance. But as far as potential in the field, I never thought about it.
Besides stressing the joy of dancing, what else do you teach in your class? Do you teach a lot of power? Foundation?
I am personally a fan of power moves, so I love teaching power moves. But in class I try to cover everything in the world of bboying. Because there are a lot of beginners, as well as people not acquainted with the foundations and basics. So I try to teach foundations and basics, and then move to power moves near the end of class.
How did you get the name Physicx?
In 2002, we won the UK Bboy Champs. And in 2003, we tried to go again, but the people had trouble pronouncing my real name, “Hyo Ken.” It was a difficult name. So I was trying to come up with a nickname, and Johnjay from Circle of Fire saw my moves and came up with the name Physicx.
Since you first started you were known for your power moves. But as your career progressed, your style has changed to more foundation. Why did you decide to evolve?
In the beginning I didn’t know about bboying that much. But as I kept on dancing, I started to learn a lot of new stuff. And as I learned those things, I think it is quite natural I moved on to the foundations, which are the basics. However, I don’t consider my style as something that has changed from the beginning. I’m still a fan of power moves. Just that I try to express what I have learned through the days.
Do you find it hard to keep up with the new bboys now? Like do you find it harder to be more creative, to come up with more explosive moves in the circles and competitions?
I think it is getting more enjoyable, because after all, I am trying to enjoy myself. And with the new people coming up, if I were in my old days I would be competing a lot. But at this point, I let go of all the competitiveness and try to enjoy myself. More people dancing means a more enjoyable bboy feeling.
You have a very healthy lifestyle compared to most bboys. You don’t smoke, don’t drink, you’re a vegetarian, right? So how do you maintain that? How do you get enough strength? Is anyone else like you, too?
Bboys WakeUp (Maximum Crew) and Tazo (Maximum Crew) are trying to start their vegetarian diets from me. But if they actually succeed or not; it is something to keep watching about. Being a vegetarian doesn’t mean I don’t have enough power. I actually feel my body becoming lighter. And as a matter of fact, a lot of the triathlon winners, they are vegetarian as well.
fyi: Physicx will eat occassional seafood.
