So Keebs, what's your take on the whole influence?
Cool to know when it came to the States, but I think most people who picked up on it did so when you did, about 15 years ago. The big 70's martial arts craze opened up the doors I guess, but you're not saying Capoeira was a part of that King Fu, Jujitsu, Tai Chi boom are you?
88' (like Ness said) to 90' sounds about right to me.
I almost wonder what bboy doesn't do some very capoeira looking moves these days , including freezes. I don't think you can do much more capoeira and still be bboying.
no..the martial arts boom was the same time as the bboy boom. hence why you saw bboys doing butterflys, butterfly twists, head kickups, tornados even back in the day. you didnt see capoeira style moves til much later. jiu jitsu didnt have any kind of boom til ufc in the early 90's. the styles taken in bboying are more from tkd and wushu..the flashier martial arts.
this is one of my favorite capoeira sites..its more oriented to the flashy stuff but has subastance as well Capoeira Video Clips
The best place to pick up vids in my personal experience is to actually check out a capoeira academy.
My old teacher Eclilson de Jesus, had a wealth of videos at his studio at ache brasil in vancouver.
Just look around your city for academies and the people who train there are probably the best to seek out for footage.
you can go to youtube for many videos ... but you should definitly check out academies for more authentic videos from reputible instructors and mestres!
if you dont have that luxury check out these names on your tube
regional:
edson
abada
mestre demetrius
mestre bimba
miudinho ( this is a style of copeira)
batizado
mestre chuvisco
angola:
cobra mansa
joao grande
mestre pastinha
jogo de dentro
mestre curio
there are many styles of capoeira ( benguela, miudinho, angola, sao bento gande de bimba, sao bento grande de regional, iuna, santa maria, jogo de dentro, sao bento grande de angola, sao bento pequeno). you can also search any of those names any find good videos.

cant wait to the see the response..love your comments..always droppin knowledge.
this is mestre cobra mansa in the yellow . he is one of the best angola mestres out there.... he is playing against a regional mestre.....watch some of their transitions and movements and you will see some familiar movesre who is also very good.
this is a guy named eberson from abada capoeira and he is one of the fastest capoeirsta out there right now .these are from abada capoeiras batizado a few years back.
these are just a few videos that have some good movements and some things you may see in bboying . i also have some footage form the early 50s that has alot of the moves bboys are doing now . you will some of the reverse handglides that ness does or even some of the twists that some of the koreans or even spee-d does. not saying they got it from capoeira but it is well within reason to believe that people from seperate parts of the world and seperate cultures can think of the same type of movements. in some way i do believe that alot of the younger generation of bboys are highly influenced by capoeira .
i know as a bboy im highly influenced by capoeria..hence i started this thread. i live next to a mestre but he doesnt speak english...he invited me to a class a year or so back. but right now i do tkd, and so i dont have the time to completly join a capoeira school. ive been told capoeira schools are like family...thats always sumtin i wanted out of a martial art.
i was loving the videos....gives me ideas...the first vid i was like wowing at all the handstand/head stand attacks.
keebla..is their a real significance to dreads in capoeira? as a teacher i assume you would be the best person to ask...ive asked this to people who are students and i never got a real straight answer of it.
WOW! that invert to front kick hahah. i see some traditional stuff like hook kicks and sweeps..nice to see some of the basics are universal no matter the martial art.
the dreads are really a big part of ANGOLA capoeira but have no significance to the art itself. alot of the angoleiros are afrocentric and study alot of african cultures. angola is considered the TRADITIONAL capoeira due to their preservation of the art in its rawest and most traditional form before the mainstream and tourists got to it in the late 40s. its just like in hip hop when we went through the afrocentric and daisy age in the whole de la soul, jungle brothers ,poor righteous teachers movement . me personally i only associate the dreads with being more in touch with the african culture side of the art.
whats the name of the mestre that lives right next to you ?
hahahahah MORCEGO IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hes a really good friend to my group and to my mestre ... tell him you know one of mestre chuviscos students. morcego is super fast and a very good instructor. very humble and full of knowledge
