There are a bunch of relevant points in every post in here. The internet definately kills that drive to go and see what's going on. It does seem like the newer kids are in this game for the social and fashion aspects too.
The main difference I see is that heads are too shook to battle just put someone in check. Instead of goin' at it cuz someone did something in the same way you do, or even if you don't like someone - seems that heads would rather talk some fascinating garbage instead of cause some beef.
let's face it, there no more rivalries anymore, everyone is all buddy-buddy. In the 90's there crews that were not cool with each other at all. They'd call out "just Begun Crew vs Breaks Crew" and an entire jam would basically stop to watch b/c of that rivalry and b/c heads are not gonna battle all buddy-buddy.
Two people I respect that currently do not keep it buddy-buddy are Phantom and rebirth. I know phantom, He knows me - we're cordial if need be but at a jam he's not worried about who's gonna see him shake my hand at jam. He actually couldn't care any less, I like that b/c that's what's missing from that golden era. Rebirth - he'll step up and battle you if he thinks your toprock is wack - classic!
And what's missing is that mentality and that fearlessness of your crew is who you're cool with and anyone else can get stepped to. People don't wanna make waves cuz you don't get asked to go to france or korea or japan for being a dick, you get asked cuz you're a cool guy that was in right place at the right time and did the right move before shaking the right person's hand in front of the right people. (Sounds kinda political huh?)
the difference to me is that battle became more and more a showcase + alot real bboys don't get their props in battles just because they dont spin 12 rounds on their hand
The reason why I think the aggressiveness in bboying has toned down is because hip-hop is bringing people together as friends. I started bboying in 07 and it helped me make a lot of friends with guys who had the same passion for bboying. Most people can be more aggressive towards people who you dont know at all as opposed to friends.
Nowadays muthafuccas that aint even at your level but will arrogantly call you out drop some simple wack shit...get up act like they took you out
straight up
On a side note, I disagree on the issue of "nowadays nobody wants to get aggressive and raw...blah blah blah" what about bboy unit USA last year? ...what about IBE 2005 USA vs. Korea..... NBL Nationals..Havikoro vs. Soul Mechanics..etc
But I will agree with that comment about too much funk!! There are dj's playing nothing but funk these days! I am sick of it too! I mean sometimes it feels like it would be a crime to play some rap.. but really thats a rare case. But is it a crime to play something like 'keep prepared for the battle' ?? or some corny ass 90's breakbeat like that?? I dunno, I like them, am I crazy!?
I just like that different energy that an electronic beat can give you, its completely different from the old funk tracks.. I mean I love funk too! but I miss that stuff... And I havent been bboying for That long...

ppl back wen i started were brought up in a different lifestyle...ppl my age now n ppl my age 8-10 yrs ago is way different, the mentallity, wat they witnessed n situations ppl were in...i think compared to wen i first was introduced the scene a lot of ppl now come from areas where they didnt struggle or live in poverty so it kinda makes the dance lose its edge n also a lot of ppl fail to be original...today i see a lot of ppl bite from nikkaz that was holdin shyt down circa 2000-2003 heavy n are still around now...the originality needs to come bak n on a personal note i feel half of the ppl that "do" this dance shouldnt be doin it cuz half the ppl are unaware of the dance b4 them n the history that is held with it, a lot of ppl do it now cuz its the "in" thing to do and lastly a lot of ppl arent dancing, they're jus doin moves they saw n it doesnt say anything about themselves or tell their story...theres a lot more shyt that comes to mind in regards to the scene but its too much to write

back then all those crew the original stuff they were doing was just blowups of all kind that was new at their time... today since footwork is such a big thing there is so much originality in all parts of the world...... especially the Europeans
also when i watch a battle that took place 2004 and before i get bored real quick bc each battle every one is throwing crazy small sets... not every time though but many time yes... except for the battle floor lords the first 2 those battles never gets boring!!
