yeh ish has been getting too serious lately.

i was born in '93 but when i look at old 90s vids and the music back then,
it seems that hip-hop used to be about getting out the lineleum floors, dusting off the vinyls, maybe a few drinks and jst enjoying good music with good ppl.

but its message has changed with my generation. Messages like getting famous to show up the "haters", and jst the general tone, seems to be a lot more pessimistic now.

im kinda new to hip-hop and i regret that youtube/the interweb has been my only teacher in bboying, cos the tutorials there jst teache the moves, and that's kinda encouraged me to focus only on those moves. "i need to learn this move to smoke ppl" kinda mentality, thats always burdened me. Heck, ive never even been to proper jam yet (i dont even knoe if theres any good ones here in Australia).

But yeh, the big problem for ppl like me is that my only teacher is youtube, when i really wish i could jst hang out with ppl like you guys. Its good that communities like this one and people like you guys exist, and i feel that we jst need more stuff like this to drop knowledge to ppl like me and the newer generation.
Don't jst teach us focus on the moves and the battles, teach us about living in the moment, kickin back with mates, forgetting bout life for a while, but also how breaking is about life, not jst the moves.

Some people over do the "cocky" self image, and that kills the entire jam, because they dont welcome new cats into the scene, instead they close doors and cause the scene to not grow.

any DJ's reading this that always play at Bboy events...heres some food for thought.

well said crumbs, but also i believe its also due to that fact that we are not creating our own music. shit that is raw and funky. look at POPPING for instants the level has risen like crazy in the last 6 years due to the fact that alot of them have started making there own music, the shit they wanna listen to. when we were dancing in the 90's it was still fresh a little bit new, and hiphop was still hiphop AND people was diggin still for funk or breaks we have never heard before. we just need to start making our own shit strait up. then we can start creating again

battles back in the day

I was b-boyin in the early 80s. It was very different! We didn't battle to get famous (well, maybe within our neighborhood) but for the love of it. It was just something that went down between crews. Crews talked crap then gathered up their boys and we set a time and place and battled. Other times it just happened at the roller rink, the sidewalk, wherever. But I agree the Internet changed everything--we never really thought about fame, we just wanted to show up the other crew.

Actual fighting was rare--that's what b-boyin was for--to take the place of fighting. We never touched during battles, just gave attitude and shit. I'm not saying a real fight never happened, but it wasn't the goal.

I have to say that the moves the kids do today are sick--we never did some of the power moves done today. It was more formula, more method, less personality. But remember, the dance was in its early stages and still developing. I think the important thing is that it's still survived, generations are still b-boyin and that's important.
