i agree with toyz. The 90s were the age of creativity. Now you see the majority play it safe by doing what everyone else is doing. Sadly alot judges support that fact by giving them a pass or maybe even give them a win. Well thats the era we live in, unfortunately, personally it kind of turned me off even going to jams. but no one can change that. It only get worse before it gets better, there is a whole new generation that are coming up strictly by watching mtv and youtube. shoutouts to those who been staying authentic and staying true to themselves and even more props to those who stay true and actually win battles, giving people the inspiration to stay unique like we did in the 90s. peace
I think one of the biggest differences is the manner in which people learn the dance.
On a positive note people have all these resources to learn what bboying is about so people seem to get started more on the right track these days. But that's also a negative, back in the days when I started you had to be way more proactive to learn the dance, you had to reach out to more people in the community and learn from them, you made more friends because you learned from people. On a negative note, its also much harder to be yourself these days, but anyone still can if they put in the effort. People are lazy in general
I remember friends having cardboards eaj , their own customized cardboards made from the big ass cardboards like from freezers or big screen tvs, not those flatscreen shit. I remember boom boxes with cassette tapes prerecorded with mixes you heard from the radio. A bunch of kids at the rec/community center getting together. There was a lot of girls who used to check out guys breakin, hence every school dance I went to there was a section of breakers who was waiting for the right hip hop track to come on so they can throw down…it was pure back then, people didn’t think breakin would make them famous or someshit to make a name or whatever… for me all I wanted to do was do the moves that my friends did, I wanted to get better, last longer when I did windmills and get more rotations when I did 1990s or 2000s The feeling has changed, I remember people throwing down repeats and shit but the way they carried their self, they won every round and you couldn’t tell them different. Oh yeah and the crowds were WAY more into it, if you did something dope, people would bust out and go bop bop and circles were mad small, you could kick someone in the face if your windmills were out of control… Oh I agree with poe1, the internet has changed bboying a lot. I remember watching VHS and not know who people were but I remember their moves I’m like yo, that shit was sick I’m going to rewind that.. lol I rewind so much I broke my vhs player lol.. and I would watch shit from like 2-3 years back and be amazed because lol it would take that long for the vid to reach T.o or some shit… on the real when I first came on to bboywold I didn’t know who Poe1 was lol until I saw a vid of Poe1 doing the Flying SuperMan mid air freeze, I was ohh it’s that sick dude lol….

also in the 90s djs use to play hardcore hiphop breaks doing the battle such as krs 1 "return of the boombat". Nowadays djs play alot of boring ass funk beats. bring back the 90s where djs and bboys were both creative and battles were hype because the music was hype

Brothas we jus have to let history repeat itself. I fuckin luv the 80's and 90's but truth is that this has went down before in the mid 80's. First we blamed the media for over exposing it, now we have the internet. If heads know the history and deep down really can relate to what hip hop heads went through back in tha day then we have to let nature take its course thats all. This also went down with the Martial arts craze in the 70's and 80's. Bruce lee and some others brought the beuty of eastern styles to the states and worlwide and then shit got played out(supposibly). Now we have heads like Tony Jaa bringing back some excitement to the screen(hes not shit compared to the coreagraphy shaw brothas and jackie chan brought to the game but its aight though). Fact is that shit sooner or later is gonna get cheesy but if some yall know what yall have posted on this forum then theres no way were gonna be stopping anytime soon. We got Mikeyice and others with dope ass footage reminding us how shit was back then. God bless them and the old school for blessing the new with all their skills and pride in hip hop. We as leaders of the new/old skool jus gotta take charge and let heads know that originality stands alone and thats that.
P.S. remember bboy.com? Props to Fresh(LA Breakers) for building that website......... I wouldnt have known about local jams if it wasnt for that site. Maaaaan god bless the internet. Fuck That!!!!! PEACE!
like people said... the internet... that and bboying was so underground compared to now..
i remember back in the day it was your skills and word of mouth that got your name out.... and instead of 193282038 well known crews there was only a few... outside of the local crews the only ones i knew of were like rsc sec air force kujo havikoro and skillmethodz
everyone was original.. BUT people didn't dance nearly as well as they do now, and people are doing wayyy harder moves now... people were also way more honest too... no bullshit posing and hiding behind labels and shit.. haha man the 90s..
oh and jams would happen like...never haha.. there would be clubs that people would go to or if you were a breaker you would try to be at parties other breakers were at.... and everyone had their own slang for moves... aw man
1. What about the recent blow-up and media exposure of b-boying? i.e. ABDC, "You Got Served", "Step Up" (Or whatever that movie's called), and so on and so forth..I've been breakin since '96 but came into the bboy scene in '99 and have noticed a significant change in our culture now that we see young ones come around trying to mimic the dance through what they've seen on TV, not knowing anything about the culture and history.. Yea, much respect to bboys doing there thing, getting gigs for shows/commercials/movies but does anyone thing the media exposure of bboying has had positive and negative affects on the rawness and authenticity of the culture?
2. youtube as everyone's already mentioned- nuff said
3. Dancing on beat, cleanness, flow and finesse get more love and respect now then in the late '90s and early 2000s. Back then people could get away with crashing sets as long as they hit a superhard or original move. Watching footage from 02, even some the best bboys weren't on point..even sloppy! There's some I believe were ahead of there time i.e. Moy, Megus, Kamlel, Storm, Skillmethodz of course many others that truly understood reald b-boying..but man crews threw down some sloppy ass routines and still got love for it in the early 2000s.

i have to agree with you 1000% percent here the 90's were some amazing times i been droping gems on here year & half already i wuz thinking about just stoping, but something inside is telling me that i am doing
something in b-boy history that nobody ever did. that's my motivation to preserve the 90's everybody seen
the 80's but it's time that the 90's get it full shine, bcuz back in them days massive monkees, rock force, style elementscrew wuz handling the seen when reveal wuz hot even tho they called him the biggest bitter
in the world. he could win the whole damn battle by himself, i love what i am seeing from the new skool but
it's just different animal these's days the internet crept into people homes and took over privacy for b-boys
i remember there wuz time you never should all your moves on camera but that's changed. somebody said
something about b-boy.com the best web site in the 90's i wuz on there it wuz cool chatting with people i
knew world wide, anyways everybody should keep droping comments on the 90's i am loving this respect to
all the new & older b-boys like myself remember i am making history for us years to come when were all dead
and gone & the smoke clear people will remember us like the greeks & romans
