My name is Curtis Hedges (AKA: Bboy Peter Pan) and I have been breaking for 23 years. For the last 12 years I have been an advocate, a supporter and an innovator with the I.B.S.S. to see Bboying become a Dance Sport. What that means is accountability and transparency in judging using a diagram and systematic calculation process that streamlines a person opinion into an easy to read layout. Using the I.B.S.S. you increase Judging accountability 100 fold in which the diagram in essence simply tells a Judge when to have an opinion but leaves that opinion completely up to the Judge. This approach promotes Subjectivity and with an objective pattern or diagram as your guide. With this in mind the I.B.S.S. was designed to be expandable solely as a Round for Round style judging platform as customary in a Bboy Battle in which all battle formats (1 VS 1 – 20 vs 20) can be accommodated by customizing the structure itself (*Adding more Rounds to the Diagram) to tailor any event that conducts Battles.
As you look into the diagram, the top portion should be obvious based on its design were the larger “Round” boxes is the area in which a judge leaves a written mark, symbol or letters they designate based on their experience and expertise to remind them after the battle specifics they witness in the round present. Like all typical sports, the first person to go out is the Offense leaving the opposing team as the Defense and this is determined typically by a coin toss or as most events do it with the most aggressive of the two Crews/Dancers going out first. The smaller Boxes found under and above each section, (Offense & Defense Rounds) are designated for the judge to Mark which team won that Round or both can be mark in the case of a tie.
There is a smaller area on the bottom left of the Diagram in which a Dyzee Style section is conducted after the battle is over and used to show the dancer based on what was witnessed by each Judge from the Rounds at what level they performed at. So as a dancer, you may win your battle because of the amount of Rounds you won, but the moves you used to Win may not have been all that amazing and this section is used to reflect that message back to the dancer. I have broken it down to Power, Style, Battle Tactic and Team Work in the case of Teams and When done correctly, the dancer gets 2 scores, a Round for Round score and an assessment score of their overall level or impression presented within the battle. As a Dancer you will see what a good Judge was thinking each individual round and what there final impression was after the battle, 2 real-time opinions using a simple diagram. A good Judge can use this score system very easily and with the addition of a competent score keeper, they can jot down there opinions and don’t have to worry about adding up the numbers. I admit that I can use a little help with the final assessment area as this area of the diagram can be changed with the preference of the dancers (census), the judges and overall culture as it evolves, but the Round for Round portion is here to stay as any events Battles shows natural symmetry in this idea.
I will put a video together in the next week or two because I have organized two smaller events using this Diagram and they were both filmed, so you folks will see that it works in real-time with a couple of familiar faces from the Los Angeles Bboy Scene using it. Other than that, I am happy that the Bboying community is interested in these ideas and if anybody wants to collaborate on the bigger picture, my door is wide open.
